Thinking of relocating to Barcelona?

Breathing Gaudí’s artwork almost everywhere you go, Barcelona is probably the most cosmopolitan and thrilling city you will live in Spain. The museums, the bars, restaurants, and the busy yet calming seaside are definitely a reason to relocate to Barcelona, offering a high quality of life that many can only dream of. The city also impresses ex-pats for its history and tradition, an aspect the locals are particularly - and rightly - proud of.

Located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with around 1.6 million inhabitants, Barcelona is the second biggest city in Spain, right after Madrid. It is considered Europe’s largest urban centre on the Mediterranean Sea, hugged by the Llobregat and Besòs rivers.

Barcelona’s proximity to the Mediterranean Sea gives expats the chance to dive into warm waters and enjoy balmy weather all year round.

Contact us and get to know more about how it is to relocate to Barcelona and the first touchpoints to get started with your new life in this astounding city.

Properties in Barcelona

There are incredible, full of life and personality places to live in Barcelona. Every corner of the city has some sort of architectural wonder to marvel at, and the buildings are just as beautiful inside! Most people in Barcelona live in apartments which vary depending on which neighborhood you live in. The average price by the square metre in Barcelona is €2,732 and monthly costs are around €500 to €700.

Registering for your NIE (Foreigner’s Identity Number)

The Número de identidad de extranjero is legally required for any foreigner living in Barcelona, i.e., if you’re staying in the country for longer than 3 months. Our After Sales Department will assist you with this process and will make sure to have all the paperwork in the correct order.

If you’re a non-EU resident, you should be asked to present documents indicating the reason you need an identity number (e.g. purchasing a property).

School and education in Barcelona if you are relocating with your family

Schools in Spain, Barcelona are divided into public, private (international), and semi-private colleges. Expats with children will be glad to know that Barcelona’s public school system is free and mostly safe. Parents still have to buy the books and school material themselves, but it shouldn’t be a problem. International schools in Barcelona are so-called private schools for foreigners. These follow a foreign country’s language and curriculum, which usually have a very high educational level. Semi-private schools in Barcelona are a perfect choice for parents who would like smaller class sizes for their children.

Healthcare in Barcelona

Barcelona’s health-care system is of high quality and has a good reputation amongst both locals and expats. Anyone holding a healthcare card (TSI) after moving to Barcelona has a chance to access the Catalan public healthcare system facilities. A visit to public health centres, however, is usually synonymous with long queues and long waiting days, before medical treatment is provided. For this reason, expats who relocate to Spain would rather invest in a private healthcare insurance, which enables them to have access to private clinics and  English speaking doctors,  which is of high interest to expats who are not yet comfortable in speaking Spanish or Catalan.
